CINCINNATI---It takes around 500 pairs of jeans to insulate an entire home. Congregation B’nai Tikvah’s Sunday School in conjunction with Lakota West High School have collected 532 pieces of denim for their denim drive which began in April 2009; more than enough denim to provide insulation for a house.
“It all started when Simon Anderson, a student in his mother’s (Lauren Anderson) Sunday school class, showed her an article from National Geographic Kids magazine. She then showed it to me,” said R. Donna Adler, Education Director at B’nai Tikvah. Adler is also a substitute teacher at Lakota West High School.
National Geographic Kids started the program to set a new Guiness World Record by collecting the most recycled clothes and to create insulation for homes affected by natural disasters. The insulation will be turned into Ultra Touch Natural Cotton Fiber Insulation.
“We received some press attention a few weeks ago and because of that, we gained some more support,” said Adler. The Cornerstone Café donated an additional 48 pieces of denim to the project.
Due to high shipping costs, R. Donna Adler and Mordecai Higgins of B’nai Tikvah will drive the denim to Washington, D.C. for delivery the second week of June.
