Camp Honey Shine Brightens Up Summer for Young South Florida Girls

Honey Shine Mentoring Program’s Annual Camp Welcomes Campers June 8th

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Jun 04, 2009 -
The last week of school is upon us and the first official day of summer is just around the corner.  For many, it is time for a break; For the Honey Shine Mentoring Program, summer is the best time to re-emphasize the lessons learned throughout the year with an added dose of much-need summer fun at the annual Camp Honey Shine, taking place June 8th-July 3rd, 2009 at the Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart in Coconut Grove, Florida.

In its fourth year, Camp Honey Shine has grown into a four-week summer day camp that offers 100 young girls (a.k.a. Honey Bugs) from the Honey Shine Mentoring Program a chance at new experiences and activities that will help create lasting summer camp memories.  From field trips, such as the June 9th visit and behind-the-scenes tour of Miami Metrozoo, to swimming, arts and crafts, reading, dance, fitness, journaling, and even a talent show, Camp Honey Shine offers these girls an opportunity to make the most of their summer break.

Tracy Wilson Mourning, founder of the Honey Shine Mentoring Program, a program of Alonzo Mourning Charities, anticipates summer camp every year.  “This is an opportunity for the Honey Shine Mentoring Program to provide a safe environment for our girls to develop their own voice by exposing them to people, resources and messages that are life changing.  During the school year, Honey Shine gathers bi-weekly for Saturday workshops. During Camp Honey Shine we get to see the girls everyday for four weeks straight. The impact that we have during this time is so much greater.  The breakthroughs and milestones our girls experience reaffirms our purpose.”

One of Camp Honey Shine’s highlighted events each year is the annual Talent Show where the Honey Bugs who attend camp have a chance to grace the stage and show off their personal talents.  Last year, celebrities Deborah Cox and Christina Milian stopped by the talent show to lend their support.  Love Rains, a South Florida poet, attended and recited a special poem of encouragement for the girls.

Camp Honey Shine allows girls to further develop their social skills, strengthen core values, practice critical thinking and team building, helping to empower them.  For more information on the Honey Shine Mentoring Program and/or to request a membership or donation kit, please contact 305/476-0095 or visit www.HoneyShine.org.
