Moldova has a remarkable wine making heritage; wine has been produced in the country for over 5000 years, and one of the oldest and most distinguished wine producers is Milestii Mici. Here, the best Moldovan wines are matured using carefully selected crops sourced from vineyards from the surrounding countryside. The clement summers and short winters, continental climate and exceptionally fertile soil makes the country perfect for growing the finest grapes. Once the grapes have been selected they are carefully bottled and matured using traditional methods and closely monitored by the Milestii Mici’s experts.
The Milestii Mici winery sits atop a labyrinth of underground cellars boasting over 250 km of corridors and more than two million bottles of locally produced wine, with vintages dating back to the early 20th Century. The subterranean network of tunnels are not only perfect for aging wine due to their constant cool temperatures and humidity, they are also recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records as housing the largest collection of wines in the world. The galleries can even be passed by car and the streets are named after some of the types of wines or grapes that are stored there, such as Cabernet, Aligote or Feteasca.
Tomas Lankutis, managing director or Imperia UK said, “we are delighted to be adding these superb wines to our portfolio, our company has been operating in the UK for just a few months and it is a major triumph for us to be granted this distribution right. It clearly shows that we have reached a level of success which is appreciated not only here in the UK, but also in Moldova itself.” Tomas continued, “we have had so much interest in our wines and our success has impressed the wine producers in Moldova.”
Moldovan wines are little known here in the UK and the Milestii Mici wines have a further secret; during the 1980s thousands of hectares of vines were scrubbed up in an attempt to combat the alcoholism that was rife in the country. For Moldova it was a national tragedy, however, Milestii Mici were quick to act to ensure that some of the most precious of the vintages survived. Hidden rooms were created in the underground cellars, were only a few thousand of the most exclusive wines could be stored and saved for future generations. Imperia UK will be introducing their customers to these esteemed wines over the coming months.
