Volunteering Week commences on June 1, raising awareness of volunteering around the UK. As the event celebrates its 25th anniversary, not-for-profit organisation Lattitude recognises its own network of young volunteers, reaching out to global and British communities.
Lattitude Global Volunteering is typically known in the UK for sending young British volunteers abroad. However, there are also currently over 400 international Lattitude volunteers working in the UK from as far afield as Brazil, Australia, South Africa and China.
Brazilian volunteer, Francieli Oliveira, who was granted a fully funded placement by Lattitude, is currently volunteering on an adult care placement in a Scope Care Centre in Colchester, Essex. “Being a volunteer in England is excellent!” says Francieli. “The English people have been really nice to me and I have learnt so much since I arrived. It’s
the best experience of my life”.
Lattitude’s UK headquarters is located in Reading, Berkshire, from where it sends 17-25 year old volunteers on various placements including teaching, caring, environmental and medical projects in 17 countries. For those who would like to volunteer abroad but may otherwise struggle to raise the funds required, a number of funded placements are available.
Richard McKenzie of the charity explains “We want to recognise, the positive work that all our young volunteers carry out around the world, particularly the international volunteers in the UK, during Volunteers Week.
“Lattitude projects are about making a positive difference to global communities. Our volunteers are not tourists; they work hard with the communities they are placed in, often filling challenging roles. Young people don’t always receive good press, and the Lattitude volunteers deserve recognition for all their efforts.”
Kelly Santos, from Brazil, was also granted a fully funded placement, and has been working as a Teaching Assistant at Talbot Heath School, in Bournemouth. “My experience as a Lattitude volunteer has been fantastic so far” she says. “I feel the work that we are doing is important, as we are helping people.”
