Eastern Michigan University faces controversy over antagonistic logo!
An Eastern Michigan University graduate, who goes only by "Eric", has created an E.M.U. logo based on the bird of the same name. The eagle is Eastern's official logo. But now a rival, bird, the Emu, is poised to take flight as Eastern's unofficial logo.
Eastern's original logo was a profile of a Huron Brave. When people found that logo offensive to American Indians, the logo was changed to an eagle. "Back then people found the eagle boring," Eric says. "It was so obvious what fun an Emu would be."
Eastern's new Emu is nested at http://thingsemu.com - a website for the bird. The website offers a light-hearted way to show support for the great teachers and students at E.M.U. "As a student I always wanted Eastern to adopt the Emu as the official logo," Eric explains. "The Emu is much more fun than that eagle."
Eric admits that he has no training as a graphic artist and it took him many months of "fooling-around"
Eric graduated from EMU with a BS in PR with a Marketing Minor. He currently works in the Advanced Engineering Center at Ford (Dearborn) as a Software Engineer and is completing his Masters in Software Engineering online through Texas Tech. He plans to return to EMU this Fall, in the Master of Arts in Mathematics - Statistics (MTAS) program.
