Singapore – Specialty chemicals company LANXESS in Asia Pacific today profiles several additives which are in use in the region by manufacturers of established product brands in the personal care and home care industries.
Many personal care products are used daily and generally come into contact with the skin. Deodorant bar and liquid soaps, antimicrobial gel body washes and deodorant sticks are some examples. Therefore quality, health and safety requirements regarding preservatives in them are very strict. All LANXESS chemicals, including those mentioned below, come with detailed safety data and technical information sheets
Preventol® antimicrobial agents and preservatives
The Preventol® product range, under LANXESS’s Material Protection Products (MPP) business unit, comprises a range of effective microbiocides for personal and home care products.
Preventol® CMK for example has a broad and balanced spectrum of activity against bacteria, yeast and mould fungi. It is also effective against viruses like herpes simplex which causes unpleasant infections of the skin. This product is used by leading companies to manufacture multipurpose household disinfectants for floor cleaning, laundry and general disinfection.
In the households, antimicrobial soaps and medicated cleansing products are essential for maintaining hygiene and cleanliness. These products help to keep pathogenic microorganisms in check and break infection chains. Preventol® SB which is used in deodorant soaps, sticks, sprays, roll-ons, shampoos, skin creams and shaving creams helps to reach this target. 40 years of use of this active ingredient have proven that it is safe and reliable.
Additionally, the Preventol® range offers a variety of preservatives and antimicrobial agents which protect home care products—such as cleaners, fabric softeners, washing up liquids, and laundry detergents— from in-can microbial contamination and maintain their product stability and quality.
In the MPP business unit, the environmental and safety aspects of a product are critically examined for the entire life of the product. Excluding the risk of damage to the health of users and consumers is of paramount importance. In parallel with the biological tests against harmful microorganisms, toxicological and ecotoxicological investigations are carried out to identify and minimize and if possible exclude all conceivable negative effects on human health and the environment.
Dr. Michael Gerle, LANXESS’s Asia Pacific Regional Manager for Industrial Preservation, MPP business unit, said, “Preventol is a trusted brand both for its effectiveness as well as safety performance that is proven through extensive tests and documentation. Consumer protection, especially in terms of health and safety, is gradually becoming a key agenda for governments in the region. This trend will further reinforce LANXESS as a choice supplier for high quality and safe home and personal care products.”
Benzyl Alcohol
Benzyl alcohol, from LANXESS’s Basic Chemicals (BAC) business unit, is a solvent used in various industries. Its low toxicity makes it especially suitable for applications in a broad range of personal care products, such as disinfectants, soap and shampoo.
Vulkanox BHT
Vulkanox® BHT, also from LANXESS’s BAC business unit, is a highly effective antioxidant which does not discolor and is non-toxic. It protects many organic compounds from being oxidized by oxygen, and is used in a leading brand of household application in Asia.
Saltidin
Many regions of the world are plagued by dangerous diseases like malaria and yellow fever, which are transmitted by mosquitoes, flies, and other insects. Saltidin® — a product from the LANXESS subsidiary Saltigo — repels such insects, preventing them from stinging.
Saltidin® is used in many insect repellants, such as MOZ AWAY Long Hour Protection or Nobite Pump-Spray, which are applied to the skin and slowly evaporate, releasing a scent that keeps flies, mosquitoes, ticks etc. away. These products combine highly effective repellant features with optimal skin compatibility.
Besides manufacturers of insect repellants, manufacturers of cosmetic and pharmaceutical formulations have interest in the Saltidin® product. Potential applications include sun creams with an insect-repellant effect.
The outstanding properties of Saltidin® have not only been confirmed by the Stiftung Warentest consumer safety group in Germany but also by the World Health Organization (WHO), which recommends the product for protection against malaria. Saltigo, which is located in Langenfeld, Germany, produces several hundred tons of Saltidin® each year for sale worldwide.
