If you are intending to steal from a high class jewelry store, in broad daylight, you will need to make everyone believe you are just one of the customers. At least that is what one man in his 50’s did, on a summery Saturday afternoon in Paris.

Wearing a Borsaline (fedora ) hat and dressed in a fashionable suit, a ‘customer’ shoved a gun in the face of the staff at Chopards and demanded around 15 top pieces of jewelry. The kind of pieces that are borrowed and worn by stars at the Oscars and Cannes film festival.

In just a mere two minutes, before the thief casually strolled out of the elite Chopard, on Place Vendome, carrying approximately $8 million worth of gems.  Chopard is situation in an upmarket area, just a stone’s throw from the famous Champs-Elysees avenue.

In December 2008, four French and Eastern European armed robbers, dressed in drag, in December 2008, robbed the exclusive Harry Winston store, on Avenue Montiange, also situation just off Champs Elysees in central Paris, in broad daylight. The store is less than 330 feet from a police station. It is said the thieves even called some of the employees by name. The robbery took 20 minutes, while the thieves gathered up $107 million worth of jewelry, before withdrawing quietly.

Representative of ‘Synergie Officier’ police union, Christophe Gesset, said “This type of robber takes a certain audacity, some nerve, a lot of calm and self-control".

The same store was robbed of more than $12 million worth of jewelry, one year earlier. The diamonds have never been found and thieves were never captured.

The diamond heist’s world record is still held by the robbery of 2005, at the Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam’ cargo terminal. A truck carrying approximately $118 million worth (unconfirmed) of diamonds was stolen in full view of a crowd of bystanders.

It all appears to be more James Bondish and Hollywood style, rather than real life. Many say that daring and creative jewel robberies have become a lost art.

Paris, the European tourist capital, was proud of its record that its police were able to remain unarmed during the day. This record has now been lost. The police will be armed both day and night.
