The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has been crashing cars for a long time. And those who have made it to their list of good cars has been slim. But for the 2009 model year the amount of vehicles that have made the grade has doubled over last year, which goes to show that automakers have safety at the forefront of their minds when designing cars.
This list is generated by looking at data from a couple of different crash tests including front-impact, side-impact, rear-impact, and roll-over. Also each car on this list much feature Electronic Stability control (ESC). According to Adrian Lund, IIHS’s President, “as many as 10,000 fatal crashes could be avoided each year if cars were equipped with ESC.” Electronic Stability Control will apply brake pressure to individual wheels when the computer senses the car going out of control, in a skid for instance.
Ford and is subsidiary, Volvo, had the most cars on this list for the 2009 Year. 16 out of the 72 cars that made the list are Ford, Volvo, Mercury, Lincoln, or Mazda. The Ford’s performed well in each crash impact category and their cars that came equipped with ESC were sure to make the list. The cars that made the list include the Ford Taurus, Lincoln MKS, Mercury Sable, Volvo S80, Ford Fusion, Lincoln MKZ, Mercury Milan, and Volvo C70. There were only 4 trucks that made the grade and of course he number one selling pick-up of all time, the Ford F-150 made the grade. SUV’s represent a large number of vehicles on the list and the Fords that made an appearance are the Ford Edge, Flex, Taurus X, and Escape. The Lincoln MKX and Mercury Mariner made the grade in the SUV segment; as did the Mazda Tribute and Volvo XC90.
Ford CEO Alan Mulally told the Government recently that Ford was focused on safety and this list really proved his point. Honda and Acura also made a strong showing with 13 vehicles making this list.
