GoScan Helps With Monitoring Swine Flu Outbreak - Software Helps Feed Flu Tracking Systems

GoScan helps track flu outbreaks in Los Angeles County as “first line of defense” in a sophisticated data collection system that allows the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LACDPH) to monitor severe medical cases such as swine flu.

PRLog (Press Release) - May 29, 2009 -
LAKE FOREST, Calif., -- GoScan® has been quietly working behind the scenes to help track flu outbreaks in Los Angeles County.  GoScan is the “first line of defense” in a sophisticated data collection system that allows the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LACDPH) to track cases and administer countermeasures for up to 13 million people.  Countermeasures may include pharmaceuticals such as vaccines and antivirals, medical materials such as masks and ventilators, and interventions such as quarantine.

“Without current information, implementation of these countermeasures would be haphazard at best,” said Mike Stuhley, president of GoScan.  “Los Angeles County was way ahead on thinking about collecting data in case of an emergency.  They purchased a county-wide license of GoScan in 2007 which enabled them to use any scanner in the public health system to scan forms to a central office for processing.”

One reason GoScan was chosen was because it required virtually no training for county employees.  The software interface consists of a big green button which users select on the computer screen to begin the scanning process.  Users simply put the paper in the scanner feeder and press the button.  Everything else is pre-programmed for the users.  This cuts down on training, support and user errors.

In 2007 and 2008 LACDPH participated in a CDC exercise using an automated scanning system which included GoScan on the front end.  According to a 2009 report by LACDPH, the resulting system provided results “close to real time” and the report recommended that the system should be expanded.

“We are happy that GoScan plays an integral part of helping Los Angeles track and respond to public health emergencies,” Stuhley said.
