Ads for SIXTEEN STORIES, NO PETS , C.J. Beck’s latest crime thriller, a Hiaasen-like comic mystery set on a south Florida beach are stirring up more trouble than Beck’s ten year successful campaign to kick Donald Trump off his part of the beach. Citizens for Pets in Condos took exception to a series of posters that appear to be advocating extreme measures to enforce the No Pets policy of a Fort Lauderdale beach condominium, The Tequesta, Las Olas By-The-Sea. They depict Black Lab “canine killing spray”, the Cat Motel “where cats check in but they don’t check out” and a Dog B Gone “dog trap”, where a cute Labrador puppy is about to take the lure set on the trigger of an oversized spring trap. The ensuing storm looked set to scupper Beck’s book launch before it began. Like Alexander McCall Smith’s Precious Ramotswe, Maida Genser of www.petsincondos.org researched methodically and hunted down the location of the heartless condo directors Howie Royal and Mona Dalton to Beck’s Sixteen Stories, No Pets. Now she’s a big fan especially as the book is not only a good mystery but also a primer on condo survival. It might even help pet owners get their way in condos.
