Surgical Science adds new camera functionality to the LapSim System enabling team training

By adding new software and a real camera, the LapSim laparoscopic training system allows realistic team training.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PR Log (Press Release)May 28, 2009 – Gothenburg, SWEDEN, and Minneapolis MN -
Surgical Science, a leading developer of laparoscopic tools for training surgeons - has developed additional functionality to increase the feeling of real-life surgery.  In real-life, laparoscopic surgery is a team effort with close communication between the surgeon and the assistant holding the camera. Until now, simulation training has been done individually by each trainee. By combining camera hardware and new software, team training is now a reality. The camera adds new challenges to the training scenarios which the trainees must solve by communicating and working together.

The software tracks the camera movements and any adjustments to focus, zoom and light intensity and then recreates a life-like training situation.  The camera is integrated in all LapSim training modules – from the Basic Skills module, which is basic laparoscopic exercises, up to the procedural simulations such as Cholecystectomy and Gynaecology.

“Team Training has become a driving force behind reducing medical errors and increasing
communication in the operating room environment” says Tony Rubin, Director of Sales, Americas.  Now, the LapSim System prepares the physician, nurse, technician and other OR staff to work together to improve patient  care”.

Existing customers can easily combine the new camera hardware with their existing LapSim system to create team training scenarios for their students.  “We are very excited over the latest addition in our training system”, says Roland Bengtsson, CEO at Surgical Science. “The development has been very successful and we are proud to present this high-quality tool to the medical world”.
