May 27, 2009 - PRLog -- Montreal QC - Mr. Homero Herrera, President of Latin America Cargo, in Montreal, Canada, is optimistic these days.  Mr. Herrera’s company specializes in providing logistics support and international trade consulting for Canadian and American companies moving goods between Canada and Latin America.
“Our business prospects are healthy,” Mr. Herrera says, “and the report from the EDC confirms what we believe.”
Mr. Herrera is referring to the recent report from the Export Development Corporation of Canada entitled Restoring Balance, Global Export Forecast Spring 2009. The report, written by Senior Economists at the EDC, is a stark reminder of the difficulty ahead for Canadian companies whose fortunes have relied on the U.S. economy. According to the EDC, the U.S. economy is expected to shrink 2.7% this year, while Central America is expected to grow 1%, with South America at 0.5%.
“We are getting calls every day from exporters wanting our assistance with logistics, and trade consulting to and from Latin America,” Mr Herrera continues, “The recent signing of the Free Trade Agreement with Peru and Colombia opens up even more opportunities for Canadian companies. “
Mr. Herrera, a native Peruvian immigrated to Canada 25 years ago.  He speaks Spanish, English and French fluently and understands the Latin American business culture well.
“Our objective is to facilitate trade between Canada and Latin America,” Mr. Herrera explains, “Not only can my staff and I communicate in the native language, we understand the way people think and work because we are part of the same culture.  We have good business contacts and relationships throughout the region. In addition, we are closely tied to our vendor partners, so we can get goods of any type, or size to or from Latin America at the most competitive price.”
As the recession wears on, more and more Canadian exporters, once solely reliant on the U.S. economy, are likely to look at expanding to other markets. Unfortunately, according to the EDC report, the economies of developed countries are also shrinking.  The GDP in both Western Europe and Japan is expected to slip 2.7% and 6.0% respectively this year, with limited growth in 2010. The report also says that the opportunity for exporters lies in “non-traditional emerging markets.”
“Business in Latin America can be complicated. Not only are there language and cultural barriers, but each country is unique. Just because you are successful in Brazil, does not necessarily mean you will be in Peru, for example,” Mr. Herrera says,” We are in constant daily contact with Latin America and have developed valuable relationships over the years with key players. These relationships have been paramount in helping our customers move their goods to their clients efficiently.  We are not satisfied until we make sure that the services that we offer carry the added valued advantage that our customers need in order to remain competitive in the Latin American Markets”
It is that mix of understanding the culture, communicating in the language and close personal contact with customer to ensure complete satisfaction that is necessary to succeed in Latin America.
“Our satisfaction comes from knowing that our expertise has helped our clients penetrate new markets, or made it easier to work with an existing client in Latin America,” says Mr. Herrera
