Phonics Method

Teaching your child to read by using the phonics method is the most rewarding thing of all. However, it is only one method of teaching the young child how to read. The child is taught how to “sound out” different and new words by learning the following rules:

• These are the consonant letter sounds: b, c, d, f, g, h, j, k ,l, m, n, p, q, r, s, t, v, w, x, y, z
• Short vowel sounds: a, e, i, o, u
• Blend sounds: br, cr, dr, fr, gr, pr, tr, wr, bl, cl, fl, gl, pl, sl, scr, str, sm, sn, sp, sc, sk
• Be sure to teach the short vowel sounds first: a as in apple, e as in elephant, i as in igloo, o as in octopus and u as in umbrella
• Digraph sounds: sh, th, ch, wh – combination of two letters to make a sound that is totally different
• Double vowel sounds: ai, ee, ea, oa – name of first vowel is said by these pairs
• Some more double vowel sounds: oi, ou, oo, ow
• Silent e: Silent e as in the word bossy.
• R controlled vowel sounds: ar, ir, ur, er, or Please make note of the fact that er, ur, and ir all make the same sound.

Phonics is simply a series of rules that young children should memorize as well as apply when they go to sound out new words. A new rule is taught to a child, i.e., the silent e sound. Then they have to practice reading words that have the silent e in them. Then children work with skill sheets at their desk in which the silent e is highlighted. Children should learn the letter sounds at an automatic level, that is, they should see the letter(s) and immediately say the sound.

A child is not able to learn to read properly without a sound foundation in phonics. It is the very foundation for success in reading. Your child will succeed to read if he/she knows phonics.

To be able to read, each child has to know the alphabet letter sounds. The child should be able to recall these sounds quickly, i.e., the child first sees the letter and then says the sound without any hesitation.

In the event that your child has to learn most of the sounds that alphabet letters make, you can help him/her make their own alphabet book. First, staple some pieces of paper together, and then ask your child to draw pictures of things that start with the sound of every alphabet letter.

You can also test the knowledge that you child possesses of each alphabet sound by using an alphabet list. Point to every letter on the list and then ask your child to tell you what each individual letter says.

Remember that as you teach phonics to your child, that each and every one is different and each child will have different learning rates. Your child may need a lot of direct instruction from you, the parent, in order to learn the alphabet sounds. Your child will probably learn the letter sounds quicker with a short, daily review.
