Swansea Museum to host Royal Navy Ship HMS Exploit

May 21, 2009 - PRLog -- The Swansea Museum floating exhibit pontoon in Swansea Marina will be playing host to the Royal Navy ship HMS Exploit this Bank Holiday. The ship is usually berthed in Penarth, but is visiting Swansea over the weekend.

HMS Exploit was built in Portsmouth by Vosper Thorneycroft in 1988, and has a crew of four and can take a maximum of 12 students at any one time, allowing them to experience sea-faring life and time on a Royal Navy ship .

HMS Exploit is affiliated to two Combined Navy Cadet Forces at Rhondda and Hereford Cathedral School, and also to HMS Superb of the Submarine Flotilla. The ship's motto is "Actis Inclitis" which means "With Illustrious Deeds".

One of Swansea Museums own vessels – the Bristol Channel Pilot Cutter Olga – is racing this weekend in a series of “Spring Race” competitions organised by the Bristol Channel Pilot Cutter Owners Association.

Olga sailed from Swansea today bound for Tenby, Dale and Milford Haven on the West Wales coast, competing for the Pilot Cup, Breaksea Rosebowl, and Westernman Cup, sailed by new Museum staff member Matthew Senior and a volunteer crew.

The Swansea Museum Pontoon & Tramway Centre will be open over the Bank Holiday weekend and HMS Exploit will be open to the public on the Saturday and Monday from 11.00 to 4.00 pm. More information from Swansea Museum on 01792 - 653763.
