CME Chief Executive Mr Reg Howard-Smith said planning for the future is imperative and the Government's approach to identifying short, medium and long term strategies to build capacity in Western Australia is supported by industry.

"The State's focus on training, allocating $47.4 million in the recent budget, will establish the building blocks necessary to prepare for when the industry returns to a position of growth," said Mr Howard-Smith.

Mr Howard-Smith said scenarios developed as part of the CME Growth Outlook Study suggest substantial growth in Western Australia will return in the medium to long-term.

"Ensuring the training system is flexible and responsive to industry needs, delivers quality training to individuals to build a skilled workforce and improves training opportunities in regional communities will enable economic development in Western Australia," Mr Howard-Smith said.

CME also welcomed the opportunity to work with the State Training Board and the Department of Education and Training, through the Resources Industry Training Council a joint venture between CME and the Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association, to implement the strategies in the training plan.

Mr Howard-Smith said CME will continue to work in collaboration with the Office of the Minister for Training in identifying synergies between resources companies' training initiatives and links to training policy.
