May 21, 2009 - PRLog -- Sanderson Stewart, a Rocky Mountain region based engineering and community development services firm, is the proud recipient of the prestigious ITE Intermountain Section Outstanding Transportation Engineering Project Award for 2009, for their design of the Shiloh Corridor project, in Billings, Montana.

The Shiloh Road Corridor project is a 4.5 Mile, $30 million urban arterial street reconstruction project completed for the Montana Department of Transportation in cooperation with the City of Billings, Yellowstone County, and the Federal Highway Administration.  It features 8 pedestrian and bicycle friendly multi-lane roundabouts, which is believed to be the most roundabouts in series on a corridor in the United States.  The roundabout solution will help to move traffic safely and efficiently; calming traffic and minimizing idle time, which will reduce emissions, save time and even save lives by reducing collision speeds and impact points.  This project required a detailed Environmental Assessment, as well as extensive agency and public coordination with more than 100 adjacent landowners.  The Shiloh Corridor will integrate the fast growing West Billings residential and commercial areas with the outlying agricultural areas while providing a vital North-South connecting route for commuters.  It has been estimated (by Big Sky Economic Development Authority) that the reconstruction of this street will foster more than $750,000,000 in new development.  Other features of the project include a large pedestrian underpass, noise barrier wall, irrigation, storm drainage, roadway lighting, and extensive environmentally conscious landscaping.

This competitive award program was established in 1984 by the Intermountain Section of the Institute of Transportation Engineers to recognize contributions to the transportation engineering profession.  Only projects from the Intermountain Section states of Idaho, Montana, Nevada, and Utah were considered.  Project judging criteria included:
1.   Sound use of engineering principals
2.   Technical Value to the transportation engineering profession
3.   Originality and innovative applications
4.   Social and environmental significance
5.   Project complexity

An honorable mention award went to the Casino Center Bus Rapid Transit Project in Las Vegas, NV.
