Tarrytown House Celebrates 45th Anniversary as Nation's First Conference Center

The Tarrytown House Estate is celebrating its 45th anniversary as the first conference center in the U.S. They're also offering a fantastic getaway package for just $196.40

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release)May 20, 2009 – The year was 1964 and the average cost of a new house was $13,000, gas was 30 cents a gallon, and the average income was $6,000.  The Beatles made their first appearance on the “Ed Sullivan Show,” the Ford Mustang made its debut, “My Fair Lady” was one of the most popular movies, and the Tarrytown House Estate became the nation’s first conference center.

Described in 1964 New York Times article as a “campus for hire,” the Tarrytown House has played host to hundreds of businesses across the country over the last 45 years.
In sharing this special anniversary celebration with its guests, the Tarrytown House is offering an incredible “1964 Getaway Package,” priced at just $196.40 per couple!
This nostalgic package represents up to a 40 percent savings.

From now through the end of the year, guests can take advantage of this great value getaway that includes deluxe overnight accommodations, a retro dinner for two in Cellar 49, two retro beers with snack mix in the Cellar 49 bar, breakfast for two, and a CD filled with classic 60’s music.

Cellar 49’s 1964 dinner menu features a variety of dishes that were popular during the early 60’s.  Begin with a garden salad with red wine vinaigrette, then choose either steak Diane or chicken cordon bleu for the main course.  Complete your meal with a vanilla and chocolate pudding parfait.

In addition, Cellar 49 is offering the following drink specials in honor of the year 1964: one-dollar sliders: nine-dollar martinis; six-dollar wine by the glass; and four-dollar draught beer.

“While the Tarrytown House prides itself on offering the area’s most modern accommodations and state-of-the-art conference facilities, we’re excited about taking a trip back in time to offer a truly unique getaway for a fantastic price,” said  Joe Santore, General Manager.  “We invite all of our guests to join us in this special celebration.”

While the property has existed as a conference center for the past 45 years, it actually dates back to 1895, when William R. Harris, founder of the American Tobacco Company, purchased the home sitting on the site of the current Biddle house.  In 1921, Mary Duke Biddle of the Duke Tobacco family purchased the large granite mansion from the Harris’. After her death in 1960, her children sold it to the African nation of Mali, which used it for a short time as a diplomatic retreat.

In 1964, the property was acquired by Robert Schwartz, a visionary and journalist who had served at one time as New York bureau chief for Time Magazine. Schwartz realized that corporate America needed a new type of lodging facility designed exclusively for business meetings and with that, he set about the task of creating the nation’s first executive conference center.  In 2005, the entire estate and conference center was sold to Destination Hotels & Resorts.

Located just 25 miles from midtown Manhattan, The Tarrytown House Estate has been certified by the International Association of Conference Centers (IACC) as the nation’s first conference center.   The Tarrytown House offers a spectacular Lower Hudson Valley lodging and meeting facility that blends historical charm with modern conveniences.  Set on 26 acres overlooking the Hudson River Valley, the Tarrytown House features impressive 19th Century mansions, as well as a contemporary atrium-style building that houses conference facilities and guest rooms. Perfect for business and leisure, The Tarrytown House offers extensive leisure and recreational facilities such as a fitness club, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, and tennis courts.  For more information, please contact the Tarrytown House at 1-800-553-8118 or check their Website at www.tarrytownhouseestate.com.
