Bronx Council on the Arts BRIO Award Winning Vocalist To Headline Free Concert

2008 BRIO Award Winner Velvet Ross to sing at BCA's Twentieth Anneversary Celebration Concert in June

PR Log (Press Release)May 20, 2009 – Bronx NY – Velvet Ross, winner of the 2008 BRIO (Bronx Recognizes Its Own) Individual Artist award for vocal performance will headline a free concert hosted by Bronx Council on the Arts at Christ Church Riverdale on June 7, 2009 at 3pm in celebration of the council’s twentieth anniversary of its prestigious independent artist recognition program.

Ms. Ross is an accomplished singer, actress, award-winning playwright and activist. She has toured overseas to Japan, Spain, Argentina and Chile. She has graced the stage at various well-known venues around New York City, including Carnegie Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, BB Kings, Birdland, CBGB Gallery, and Sony Sound Stage. She is an Amateur Night at the Apollo winner and winner of the Miss Black World Pageant New York 2004. Velvet Ross is the Host, Executive Producer and Creator of the VRoss Report, a show that brings arts and politics together in a political format. She is a resident of the North Bronx.

For twenty years BRIO has provided outreach and support to Bronx artists in the literary, media, performing, and visual arts, awarding more than $500,000 to over 200 artists. The Bronx Indie Artist Series is designed to encourage artists and arts collectives to explore new performance sites and to forge a closer connection to their audience and community. Together, BCA’s BRIO program and its Bronx Indie Artist Series complement each other by finding and nurturing outstanding Bronx performing artists and providing them with opportunities through which to showcase their talent.
