Backup Direct Warns Business Owners To Step Up Protection Against Lost Or Stolen Data

Backup Direct is warning small business owners that password-only protection is no longer enough to ensure company data is not exposed due to loss or theft.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release)May 20, 2009 – Backup Direct is warning small business owners that password-only protection is no longer enough to ensure company data is not exposed due to loss or theft. The business-backup company insists additional measures need to be considered to address the continuing rise of mobile and highly sensitive data that is becoming more widely dispersed via laptops.

To help protect business owners from data loss, Backup Direct has launched intelligent encryption service, DataDefense, which enables lost or stolen laptops to be automatically secured – either via data deletion or disablement – to ensure sensitive data absolutely cannot fall into the wrong hands and that the business remains protected at all times.

The Backup Direct service enables users to select the business-critical files which should be automatically deleted in case of loss or theft and files which should just be encrypted until the laptop is recovered. The option to delete encryption keys rather than the data itself also safeguards the user against accidental deletion.

Gordon McMurray, managing director of leading financial services regulatory consultancy, NRS Regulatory Services Limited (NRS), who has tested the Backup Direct service comments, “We made a conscious decision to seek out a commercial partner, with strong industry credentials and a high standard of client care, to assist in delivering encryption and remote destruction capability for all laptops our consultants use in the field.

“In part our thinking was driven by a recent paper issued by the Financial Services Authority in the UK, where the FSA required its regulated firms to review data security across the board to ensure client and sensitive data is handled securely at all times.

“The product has been rolled out with minimum effort for the end users. We would recommend both the professionalism of Backup Direct and the product itself, which is simplicity in operation.”

Brett Raynes, managing director at Backup Direct, comments: “With 2008 branded ‘the year of the lost laptop’ by research house Forrester*, many senior executives will know the panic that sets in when they realise that their laptop has been lost or stolen. DataDefense tools offer an absolute safeguard against human error and robbery, often unavoidable but potentially devastating downfalls for so many businesses.”

The DataDefense service from Backup Direct is available immediately. Pricing is dependent on the level of security required and is available upon request via 0800 0789 437 / sales@backupdirect.net.
