Is that a real baby, I can't believe it!

No it is actually a reborn doll created from a vinyl doll kit, painted to look like a real baby and in many cases you can't tell the eifference between the vinyl kit and a real baby till you look a lot closer. Amazing? Yes they are.

PRLog - May 19, 2009 - Have you ever seen a doll so lifelike you would expect it to cry at any minute, or to start breathing because it looks like a real human baby?  Well now you can own your very own reborn baby doll.  These dolls come with subtly painted veins which look like they are just visible under the mottled baby skin.  Many many layers of heat set paint are used to bring these reborn doll kits to life so they can easily be mistaken for a real baby.  Every single crease is shaded, and when a preemie is created, milk spots, skin mottling, baby pimples enhance the realism.
Many reborn dolls come with three quarter length arms and three quarter legs and a nice soft cloth body which makes it very cuddly and sort of floppy like a real baby.  Some reborn kits used to make a reborn doll, have full length arms to the shoulder and legs which are vinyl to the hip.  This does make the doll easier to dress as you are not trying to hide the cloth cap on the top of the arm or the top of the leg which is a part of a three quarter limb baby.
Enhancements like vinyl belly plates and tushy plates can also be added for realism which are great for posing your baby with a bare belly.  There are even some doll bodies which are anatomically correct for your baby boy or girl.
It happened in Queensland, Australia that the police actually broke into a car to rescue the ‘baby’ left in the car seat on a hot day to find when they got the door open, the baby was actually a doll.  That is how exact the realism is.
Other realistic additions the baby can have is a beating heart which is a heart shaped box slipped into a body pocket which gently beats in the rhythm of a heart when you hold the baby close.
Another item is a breathing mechanism put into the body which lifts the chest up and down the way a chest would move if the baby was really breathing.
Some people go to the length of having a ‘fake’ umbilical cord attached to the belly button of the belly plate or even electrocardiograph wires on a preemie reborn baby.  The additional items are only restricted by your imagination.
Reborn babies are weighted as closely as possible to a real baby’s weight, and glass beads and poly fill are usually used inside the limbs and often poly pellets and poly fill are used in the body of the doll.
If buying a reborn baby make sure it is not filled with anything that will deteriorate or will affect the vinyl over time.  Examples of a inappropriate weighting for a reborn would be using rice, kitty litter, sand, dirt, or any similar substance to these.  Rice would attract vermin, and kitty litter could compromise the vinyl with the chemicals used in it, sand and dirt, well they stand to reason they could house insects, or discolour the vinyl over time.
Reborn dolls can be made with ethnic coloured skin, Asian, Caucasian or any colour you choose, it is just a matter of the different paints used to create the end effect.
Usually the hair on a reborn doll is made from kid angora mohair (goat).  The finer the better, and it comes in a variety of natural hair colours.  Occasionally other materials are used but the kid angora is the closest to real baby hair.  Each of these hairs are inserted with a special needle one at a time.  This is very time consuming, but very rewarding because it gives a very realistic appearance to the hair.  The mohair can be straight or wavy or curly depending on the quality and the source of the mohair.  To complete a reborn doll from the beginning to the end will usually take around 20 hours or more if the doll is the size of a toddler.
Many ladies set out whole nurseries for their reborn doll collection with bassinette, cot, change table and every conceivable item a real baby would have.  Some really enthusiastic reborn baby ‘mothers’ take their babies out for the day shopping or for a drive in the car, but on the whole reborn collectors just enjoy their babies as decoration in their homes.
Reborn babies have been used extensively with dementia patients who can spend many hours looking after their babies and will often think they are back with their own children again.  This can be very comforting to them and has been known to convert a very difficult patient into an easy to handle person because of the reborn baby doll which looks so realistic.
