Columbia County Fairgrounds, St. Helens, OR. On June 14th, the dogs will surely take over! Not to fear – they are flocking in to test their steady-as-steel nerves and no-fear instincts through the American Temperament Test Society (ATTS).
Technically, the ATTS Temperament Test focuses on and measures different aspects of temperament such as stability, shyness, aggressiveness, and friendliness as well as the dog's instinct for protectiveness towards its handler and/or self-preservation in the face of a threat.
The dogs are tested by simulating a walk and facing them with various difficulties that could be encountered. Obstacles include friendly or threatening strangers, loud noises, and other fun surprises, all geared to test natural reactions.
The test has gained popularity recently, especially in our current environment, where breed specific legislation seems to be on everyone’s mind. This is an avenue that allows owners to show that their dogs are sound and able to be good family members and a part of the community at large.
Although this event historically draws a large number of attendees, the expo promises much more – for the canine adventurer to the couch dog next door, there is something for everyone. Protection Dogs International will hold a trial, International All Breed Canine Association will hold a conformation show, and don’t forget the Raffle for Rescue which boasts such awesome prizes as a free night at an area hotel! This is THE place to be!
The event will be held June 13 and 14, 2009 – the ATTS is only on June 14 and pre-registration is strongly encouraged. For more information, both attendees and interested vendors should visit our website at www.nwworkingdogs.com. We’ll see you there!
