The sailing trip is to Buck Island Reef National Monument, an uninhabited island north of St. Croix. The park is one of a few fully marine protected areas in the National Park System. The 176-acre island and surrounding coral reef support native flora and fauna, including the hawksbill turtle and brown pelican.
St. Croix offers much to explore. The island's rolling green hills, spectacular beaches and tropical climate have welcomed many adventurers throughout history. Since the arrival of Christopher Columbus more than 500 years ago, seven different countries have claimed the 84-square mile island: Spain, Holland, England, France, Knights of Malta, Denmark, and lastly, the USA, which purchased the Virgin Islands from Denmark in 1917 for $25 million.
