Washington, D.C. / Fort Bragg, NC / Fort Drum, NY, May 19, 2009:

Members of The American Widow Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to this generation's military widows, will be hitting the road in an RV adorned with the nearly 5,000 names of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our Nation. Their travels will help them fulfill their mission to unify their fellow widows in celebrating the lives of their spouses, their survival and the overall love that has carried them through.

With a new generation comes new ways to support and connect to others. Social networking sites such as Twitter, YouTube, and a blog will play a key role as the organization takes others “along for the ride” via the internet. Military survivors should never have the sense that they are alone and the American Widow Project is uniting widows; both in person and online.

The RV will make its first stop in Washington D.C. this Memorial weekend to meet with other survivor groups, make a visit to Arlington Cemetery, and participate in the National Memorial Day parade. Fort Drum and Fort Bragg will follow with more outreach to widows and widowers. The AWP believes that the best way to carry on with the legacies of the fallen is to reach out to the spouses of the soldiers who fought and died next to them.
This organization was the creation of Taryn Davis, who lost her husband, Cpl. Michael Davis, in Iraq May 21, 2007. She began traveling around the country to hear other women's stories of love, tragedy... and overall survival. What began as her personal journey has expanded into a non-profit organization, a documentary film, and a growing website.
