Modern Skate & Surf began in 1979 with a 1,300 sq. ft. retail store in Royal Oak, Michigan at the base of the water tower to the Detroit Zoo in 1979. They have grown to open an 80,000 sq. ft. world class indoor skate park complex to compliment their popular retail outlet on Woodward Avenue at 12 ½ mile in Royal Oak. They also have a retail store in Lansing, MI and an indoor skate park and retail store in Grand Rapids, MI.
The newest 80,000 sq. ft. facility on 4 ½ acres is so big it’s actually in both Madison Heights AND Royal Oak. The new Modern Skate Park will be the site of live music, DJ’s, many give-a-ways and several high profile skating events this Memorial Weekend. (www.modernskate.com)
“With the popularity of skateboarding, inline skating, and BMX riding, we at Modern Skate & Surf want to continue to invest in Michigan by creating a world class skating, training and events center for ‘Alternative Sports,’” says Owner and President, George Leichtweis. “These kids are tremendous athletes and need a safe, controlled environment to practice their sport of choice.”
Even if you don’t skate, you might want to see some extreme athletes up close and personal and see why the X Games have become so popular.
