Online Registry for Non-Donors Launched Nationwide

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - May 19, 2009 - DoNotTransplant.com has launched its national service to protect Americans from government sanctioned appropriation of their body parts.  DoNotTransplant.com safeguards the rights of Americans with the only national online registry of people who do not want to donate their organs and tissue when they die.

"DoNotTransplant.com was created in response to changes in the 2006 Uniform Anatomical Gift Act (UAGA) that make it easier to harvest Americans' body parts without their consent," says Mark Ferraro, Senior Vice President of DoNotTransplant.com.

Under the 2006 UAGA, remaining silent or revoking an anatomical gift is not evidence that you do not want to be a donor.  You have to affirmatively refuse to make an anatomical gift.  Many people believe that they can revoke an anatomical gift by un-checking the "organ donor" box on their driver's license, by tearing up their donor card, or by removing their name from a state's organ donor registry.  Sadly, this is not the case.

DoNotTransplant.com maintains a national registry of Americans that have decided not to make anatomical gifts upon their death.  Organ and tissue procurement organizations operating in states that have adopted the 2006 UAGA are required to check this registry before harvesting the body parts of any person who is a potential donor.

The 2006 UAGA has been adopted in 34 states and the District of Columbia.  It is expected that the remaining states will adopt the law over the next several years.

"The purpose of the DoNotTransplant.com service is not to discourage organ and tissue donation," adds Mr. Ferraro.  "Rather, the intent is to bring clarity and peace of mind during a time when delay or confusion can result in a failure to carry out your end-of-life wishes."

There are lots of common reasons for not wanting to donate.  Some Americans object to the medical policies and procedures associated with donation.  Others have religious, cultural, or financial objections.  Others fear passing on a disease to the recipients of their body parts.  Still others fear their rights won't be protected should they be unable to communicate their intentions at or near their death.
