Emily Palit, Partner of It Chick Clothes, LLC, a plus size clothing company for young girls ages 7 to 12, issued the following statement today in response to Meme Roth’s characterization of plus size clothing as going down with the Titanic rather than getting on a life boat.
“The presumption that clothing should only be offered in a narrow range of sizes smacks of bias. Humiliation and exclusion have yet to prove helpful in losing weight. There is no evidence to suggest that plus size clothing encourages weight gain, but numerous studies have shown the effects of ridicule on the psyche.
Declaring a ‘war on obesity’ or launching ‘antiobesity activisim’ disregards the human lives behind headlines and statistics.
Plus size clothing vendors recognize that bodies come in a range of shapes and sizes and celebrate that individuality with a variety of clothes. These vendors believe that the joy of style should not be limited to a few, but rather open to all women and girls on the spectrum of size.”
