Drug Delivery experts explain why we should take the Swine Flu epidemic seriously.

Swine Flu may possibly spread fast across the globe; we investigate the potential pandemic it may cause. We also delve into the Pandemic Phase levels.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - May 15, 2009 -
The swine flu epidemic has been all over the news, splashed across front pages, clogging up news slots and inducing widespread panic in the process. The question is should you be concerned for your safety and that of your family? The answer: an unequivocal and resounding YES. What with porous borders, medication shortages and the lack of a swine flu vaccine you should most definitely be concerned.

The last pandemic scare in recent history was the Avian Flu, classified a Phase three on the World Health Organisation’s Influenza Pandemic Scale. This effectively means that the disease was predominantly contained to animal infections, with little or no human infections reported.  Swine Flu, on the other hand has been given a whopping Phase five rating, which means that there is widespread human infection. This placed the H1N1 virus two steps above Avian Flu and a mere one step below a fully-fledged pandemic. Some sources are claiming that is has been rated incorrectly and should already be classified a Phase six.

On May 3rd it was reported that the WHO may yet raise the rating to a Phase six alert level even though the symptoms are in many cases little or no more severe than that of the seasonal flu. At this date, Ireland had become the 17th country to confirm cases of Swine Flu and it was reported that the virus may be spreading in five nations among inhabitants that were unconnected to Mexico, the country where the first cases were reported. Currently over 33 countries have reported positive infections.

So, what is the difference between a Phase five and a Phase six pandemic? Information from the official World Health Organisation suggests the following:

A Phase five pandemic is defined by human spreading of a virus in two or more countries in any one WHO region. Although most countries will not be affected at this stage, by declaring a Phase five, the organisation indicates that a pandemic is probable and that mitigation measurements should be communicated planned and implemented as soon as possible.

Once a Phase six pandemic is declared, the virus is effectively causing community level outbreaks in at least two different WHO regions, while still adhering to the criteria of a Phase five. Once a pandemic reaches Phase six, it is certain that a global pandemic is to be expected shortly.
So, what can you do to safeguard you and your family against the onslaught of the dreaded Swine Flu pandemic?

   Educate yourself. Find reliable sources and learn what the symptoms are and when it is the correct time to seek medical treatment.
   Keep it simple. Wash your hands, cover your face when you cough, don’t touch your face needlessly and stay away from people who are sick.
   Stock up on the necessary antiviral medication. Tamiflu and Relenza have both been found to be effective in keeping the virus from replicating the body of the host. These medications are being recommended by the CDC as a dynamic way in which to prevent serious flu complications.
