Fine Furniture, Decorations and Jewelry From the Estate of Elisabeth Plankinton Mackintosh
Elisabeth Plankinton Mackintosh of, Palm Beach, New York City, South Hampton, and Milwaukee was the daughter of William Woods Plankinton and Alexandra Stuart Plankinton and the great granddaughter of two important 19th C. American Industrialists John Plankinton and James Mair Stewart (Stuart). John Plankinton was the indeed the founding father of the meat industry in Wisconsin if not the Midwest. In 1864 he joined with Philip D. Amour to form the Plankinton Armour Company and provided meat for the Union Army during the Civil War.
James Mair Stewart (Stuart) established a major construction company in the US and Canada responsible for the erection of many well known and important buildings including: Grand Central Station and the 3rd Madison Square Garden in New York, the Hotel Savoy in London, the Cha¢teau Frontenac in Quebec, the Mitsui Gomei Kaisha bank in Tokyo.
Many of the furnishings offered for sale in this auction have their origin from the Plankinton Palm Beach mansion Casa del Ensuenos ("House of Dreams"), designed, built and to a large degree furnished in 1923 by the celebrated Palm Beach architect Addison Mizner.
