Rapidly decelerating growth of mobile voice traffic in Western Europe

Mobile voice traffic is rapidly decelerating its growth. In 2008, The total mobile voice traffic in Western Europe increased by 6.5% to 764.6 billion minutes, showing a strong deceleration from the 2 previous years. As a comparison, in 2007 mobile voice traffic increased nearly 11% and in 2006 over 13%.
Average monthly minutes per subscriber slightly decreased to 135 (-0.6%). Irish subscribers are the most intensive chatters with 205 average minutes per month, overtaking their Finnish counterparts who averaged 205 minutes monthly. German and Swiss subscribers are the least talkative with an average of 64 and 96 average minutes per month, respectively.
Over the last three years, the total mobile minutes are growing at a decreasing rate while average monthly minutes per subscriber decreased for the first time in 2008. This trend may continue because of customers opting to use mobile messaging — like SMS and MMS — instead of talking directly, which is projected to grow 3% and 9%, respectively, over the next two years.
