May 13, 2009 - PRLog -- A local school is heading the way in teaching its pupils personal safety skills

A group of 20 children aged between 7 and 11 yrs from St Monica’s Catholic Primary school are leading the way and tackling the subject of personal safety head on.
With a recent surge in anti-social behaviour across the country, which has led to an alarming increase in knife related fatalities amongst our young, head teacher Mr Peter Kennedy has taken some direct and very positive action by introducing the Life Skills for Children programme into his school.

Head teacher Mr Kennedy said “The Life Skills for Children programme provides children with some very important skills to increase their confidence, ability to communicate and identify potentially dangerous situations.  The children have enjoyed learning these very important skills and I am pleased that we have developed our very own junior Life Skills instructor team here at St Monica’s”

The group of children have spent several weeks completing the junior instructor course and are now preparing to teach the Life Skills material to the pupils at St Monica’s.

“Life Skills is a completely non-physical personal safety and communications course where learning whilst having FUN is high on the agenda. I am extremely pleased with the progress of the St Monica’s junior instructor team as they all demonstrate that regardless of your age anybody can become a good teacher with the right determination, willingness to learn and enthusiastic attitude. St Monica’s have demonstrated that the very important subject of our children’s personal safety can be successfully delivered in a school environment.” said the founder of the LSFC programme.

On Wednesday June 3rd, St Monica’s Catholic primary school, Milton Keynes will be hosting a presentation of the Life Skills for children programme to local schools, businesses and community leaders.
The presentation will clearly demonstrate the many benefits attached to educating young people in the Life Skills programme.

We are calling on local schools, businesses and community leaders to attend the presentation and support the Life Skills movement to positively educate every child in Milton Keynes in the correct skills to increase their personal safety.

Gary Payne from Life Skills said " We are ready to deploy the Life Skills programme Nationally and positively educate over 10,000,000 young people in the UK within 25,000 educational establishments. We are calling on companies across the UK to add their support to this very important project."
