PRLog (Press Release) - May 13, 2009 -
Lake Oswego, Ore.  – BIOTRONIK Inc., the pioneer in implanted cardiac rhythm management devices that incorporate wireless remote monitoring technology, announced today the U.S. launch of its Lumax 540 series. The technologically advanced devices, which include implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) and cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillator (CRT-D) devices, deliver industry-leading features to save and enhance patients’ lives.

Combined with BIOTRONIK Home Monitoring®, the company’s innovative wireless remote monitoring system for implantable-device patients, the Lumax 540 series enables continuous automatic data transmission of clinically relevant events. The information is available to physicians online, allowing them to monitor their patients’ cardiac and device status without patients having to visit the medical office.

“Lumax 540 has an excellent range of features that allows physicians to tailor pacing and ICD therapies to each patient’s individual needs,” said Dr. Charles Love, Professor of Medicine and Director of Cardiac Rhythm Device Services at The Ohio State University Medical Center, Columbus, Ohio. “Coupled with the BIOTRONIK Home Monitoring technologies, we are able to access patients’ clinical data, such as cardiac status, alert history, and clinical notes, online anywhere in the world.  This makes for an excellent and comprehensive rhythm management solution.”

More Programming Solutions
The Lumax 540 series offers a full suite of programming solutions for state-of-the-art tachycardia therapy management that allows the physician to optimize therapy based on patients’ dynamic needs.

The Lumax 540 series DFT Manager allows physicians to non-invasively manage high-DFT patients using programmable shock pathways, waveforms, and polarities. These features are designed to ensure that life-saving shock therapy is delivered successfully.  Additional advanced features, including RVsense Triggering and Negative AV Hysteresis, ensure effective resynchronization therapy for heart-failure patients.

Enhanced Painless Protection
A comprehensive set of capabilities -- including automatic sensitivity control, SMART discrimination algorithm, ATP one shot and ATP optimization -- are designed into Lumax 540 devices, sparing patients the pain and anxiety resulting from unnecessary shocks.

Superior Remote Management
Clinical data from the TRUST1 study, completed in 2008, demonstrates that remote monitoring allows a reduction in the number of in-office follow-up visits while maintaining patient safety, leads to earlier detection of arrhythmias, and enables more efficient use of clinic time.

The Lumax 540 series offers seamless remote monitoring capabilities through the BIOTRONIK Home Monitoring® system.  With landline and cellular-based GSM technology, the BIOTRONIK Home Monitoring® system is the only remote monitoring system in the industry that can report clinically relevant events to the patients’ clinic directly from anywhere in the world with access to the GSM network.  Lumax 540 series with BIOTRONIK Home Monitoring® helps physicians efficiently and easily monitor patients, anytime, anywhere.

Lumax 540 series Heart Failure Monitor Online® continuously monitors patients’ conditions, detecting changes in heart failure conditions with an extensive range of clinical predictors.  In addition, the Automatic Threshold Monitor performs daily threshold measurements.  These features benefit physicians by helping them to identify clinically relevant atrial fibrillation and to detect worsening heart failure status

Extended Lifetime
BIOTRONIK, a vertically integrated company, develops and produces industry-leading batteries that allow the Lumax 540 devices to operate for an extended time. Patients benefit from this extended battery service time because they will require fewer device replacements over time, thereby helping to reduce the risk of undergoing repeat procedures.

“The Lumax 540 devices offer a unique combination of advanced tachycardia therapy management, diagnostic capabilities, and remote monitoring technologies to support physicians in improving patient care,“ said Jake Langer, president of BIOTRONIK, Inc. “The Lumax 540 series further demonstrates BIOTRONIK’s engineering excellence and focus on patient-centered product innovation and quality.”
