In 2008, among the overall airfields in China, 47 airfields exceeded the annual passenger handling volumes of 1 million man-times, holding the line over the previous year and accounting for 95.49% of the total passenger handling volumes in the overall airfields; 10 airfields finished the passenger handling volumes above 10 million man-times, unchanged over the previous year and accounting for 56.87% of the total passenger handling volumes in the overall airfields. The passenger handling volumes in the airfields of Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou accounted for 34.62% of the total passenger handling volumes in the overall airfields.

Among the various airfields, 44 airfields handled over 100 million tons of cargos and posts, one more compared with the last year and accounting for 98.83% of the total cargo handling volumes in the overall airfields, in which the airfields in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou handled 57.42% cargos and posts.

In 2008, Civil Aviation Administration of China newly added 8 civil transport airfields, most of which lied in the western, central and northeastern parts of China, the record high in the history. In 2008, Civil Aviation Administration of China confirmed 22 major construction projects, in which the expansion projects in Beijing Capital International Airport, Tianjin Binghai Airport, Shanghai Pudong Airport, Wuhan Tianhe Airport and Taiyuan Wusu Airport and the vacant and terminal reform in the first phase in Beijing Capital International Airport and the route reform from Beijing to Xiamen had been in operation.

By the end of April 2009, the airfields in operation in Xinjiang had reached 14, the largest airfield province in China.

Over the past five years, Xinjiang had completed the new construction, relocation and expansion of 8 airfields within the border and newly added four feeder airfields in Karamay, Nalati, Kanasu and Hami. The third phase expansion project of Urumqi International Airport will be in operation in October 2009. On that occasion, the total annual passenger handling volumes will reach 16.35 million man-times, 275 thousand tons of cargo and post handling volumes and 155 thousand landing and taking off planes.

At present, Xinjiang has opened 114 routes, including 32 international routes. By the end of 2010, the total operation airfields in Xinjiang will reach 17.

According to the plans of Civil Aviation Administration of China, China will at least newly construct 60 feeder airfields in 2009 to 2010, including the newly-build and expanded airfields links in Kunming, Chongqing and Nanning etc; the newly-built and expanded feeder airfields in Guangxi Hechi and Yunnan Tengchong. Civil Aviation Administration of China is planning to start the hub and link airfield projects in Chengdu, Xi’an and Guangzhou etc and more than 40 feeder airfield projects in Yanan, Lvliang and Huaian etc, the investments in these construction projects exceeding 200 billion Yuan (29.3 billion USD). In 2010, Civil Aviation Administration of China is planning to start the hub and link airfield projects in Shanghai Pudong, Chengdu, Wuhan and Nanjing and more than 20 feeder airfield constructions in Daocheng and Yading etc with the investment scale reaching 250 billion Yuan (36.4 billion USD).

As far as the investors are concerned, it is the first choice to invest in the airfields in China from the long run, which is characterized as strategic investment. At present, the investments in Chinese airfields have been not very restrictive for the civil capitals and the foreign funds, and there are only some specific requirements for the investment ratio: some large link airfields have admitted to absorb the foreign funds. However, some large airfields, such as Shanghai Pudong Airfield, receive considerable government investments with definite construction goals and the civil capitals and foreign funds can not intervene in large amounts. Meanwhile, the demands for the feeder airfields are increase in China, which will become the investment hotspot later. Also, with the intensification of the franchise operation for the airfields, the entry barriers of the airfield services will be cut down largely and the more investments will be used in the airfield services.
