Is It Hearing Loss or Just Earwax? A Quiz for Protect Your Hearing Month (October)

A Quiz for National Audiology Awareness and Protect Your Hearing Month, with comments by Audiologist Dr. Stephen Glasser, Au.D. , director of Long Island Audiology.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - May 12, 2009 -
Great Neck, NY--Can you hear me now? 1 out of 10 Americans of all ages have a hearing problem!

According to the Better Hearing Institute, it is not just seniors who can’t hear: one in six baby boomers, one in fourteen Generation Xers, and at least 1.4 million children have hearing problems.  In fact, 65% of people with hearing loss are younger than 65!

“Untreated hearing loss affects every social interaction,” said Dr. Stephen Glasser, Au.D., director of Long Island Audiology,  “and we now know it negatively affects household income as well--- on average, by about $23,000 a year.”

Prolonged exposure to loud noise, aging, ototoxic drugs, and certain medical conditions are all factors that can lead to inner ear damage.   Hearing aids, a cochlear implant, or assistant listening devices might be recommended.  At minimum, a baseline hearing test makes sense for all adults, according to Dr. Glasser.   Furthermore, “we can video your ear canal to check for earwax.”

Quiz: How do I know if I need my hearing evaluated?
   (Yes =3 pts; No=0 pts; Occasionally= 1 pt)

·      Do you have problems hearing over the telephone?
·      Do you have difficulty hearing conversation in a noisy background, such as a party or restaurant setting?
·      Do your family members complain that you turn the TV volume too high?
·      Do you have difficulty following conversation when two or more people are talking at the same time?
·      Do you miss common sounds like the phone or doorbell ring?
·      Do you misunderstand some words in a sentence and need to ask people to repeat themselves?
·      Do you feel that people seem to mumble, or don’t speak clearly?
·      Do you avoid social activities because you cannot hear well and are afraid to make improper replies?
·      Does your family complain about your hearing loss?
·      Do you feel that you need to strain to understand conversation?

0-3 points:  Relax-- you don't need help just yet.
4-6 points:  You may have a hearing problem.  A complete audiological evaluation would provide a definitive answer.
7or More points:  Uh-oh--Your score strongly suggests that you may have a hearing problem and that a complete audiological evaluation is warranted.
