An estimated 80 percent of American adults currently have some form of periodontal disease, an infection of the tissues that support your teeth. Dr Sherzoy says we could begin seeing young teens developing these harmful diseases at an early age.
Periodontal diseases are classified according to the severity of the disease. The two major stages are gingivitis and periodontitis. Symptoms of gum disease include:
• Bad breath that won't go away
• Red or swollen gums
• Tender or bleeding gums
• Painful chewing
• Loose teeth
• Sensitive teeth

Dr Sherzoy wants the public to know what dentists have been preaching for the past 10 years, “Infections in the mouth can wreak havoc on other parts of the body.” Research has shown, and experts agree, that there is an association between periodontal diseases and other chronic inflammatory conditions, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer’s disease. Therefore, treating inflammation may not only help manage periodontal diseases but may also help with the management and prevention of other chronic inflammatory conditions.
