After retiring from 28 years in the Fire Service, Deputy Chief Frank Michaud was not ready to stop responding to humanity's problems. His job in the fire Service was just that, responding to incidents where people had made a mistake, and were now in need of help, usually in pain and experiencing their worst day ever. Chief Michaud's job was to make sure these people were given care with competency, compassion and respect, so that the damage to their lives could be minimized as quickly as possible. After retiring and looking at the the current need for consumer conservation, due to the overwhelming daily waste of energy and non renewable resources, Chief Michaud chose the fire service's concept of prevention as a guide to join in the movement of conservation. A big part of conservation is the consideration that choices we make today will certainly affect our children and grand children's ability to survive. The long term consequences of squandering energy resources now is made evident by the example of Hurricane Katrina. A few days of supply interruption and we are right back to the stone age. "Our economy and resulting society crucially depends on the uninterrupted supply of everything we need to function. This supply is delivered by the vast use of polluting and non sustainable energy resources, yet we eagerly look for every new modern convenience to add to the consumption. And then in a few weeks or months, when the gizmo stops working it is quickly deposited in the dump along with all the other stuff we thought we needed when we bought it".
Prevention of a grim future starts with small steps everyone can muster. Changing a national mindset will take time but it happens one person at a time. Collectively, not much is impossible when you are dealing with America's will. Conservation now is prevention at it's best, predicting a brighter future for our children. Chief Michaud is not saying stop buying, just rethink the longer term results of adding to the global energy demand with every new energy using luxury item that is offered. The non essential energy using luxuries we reward ourselves today could in fact accelerate the suffering of future generations when the machine finally grinds to a halt. There is only so much oil, coal, natural gas, drinkable water, agricultural land, rain forrest and wild untouched places. Sooner or later (right now it looks like sooner) all of these will be depleted. Gone. Forever. Without constraint now we step on the go fast pedal to this sad and dismal result.
