Protestors To 'lay Seige' To Central London

Thousands of demonstrators are expected to converge on the heart of Westminster on the 11th May in protest at parking charges for motorbikes and scooters in the borough, in what could be one of the largest demonstrations of its kind seen in London.

May 5, 2009 - PRLog -- A protest against a new bike parking charge will bring traffic in Westminster to a standstill, demonstrating the gridlock that would paralyse the Borough if motorbikes and scooters were replaced by other forms of transport.

The No To Bike Parking Fees Campaign, supported by many organisations including the Taxpayers’ Alliance, is leading the opposition to the charges, which are still in a controversial ‘experimental’ stage, and has organised the demonstration to highlight the scale of anger over what is widely seen as a stealth tax.

4000 protestors descended on Westminster City Hall on March 31st, where the tax was being discussed by councillors in a Scrutiny Committee Meeting. The Campaign presented a rebuttal to the Council’s interim report, but it was apparent that the committee was determined to press ahead with the scheme despite many factual errors in their own documentation.

Warren Djanogly, Chairman of the No To Bike Parking Fees Campaign, said: “Westminster cannot sweep this issue under the carpet, or bury their heads in the sand. This unfair tax must end, and until it does, these protests will continue, and can only increase in size.”

The Campaign is advising anybody due to be in the borough on 11th May to avoid the area unless travelling by tube, bicycle, foot, or, of course, motorbike.
