Doctor Simon Ourian is the Medical Director of Epione Beverly Hills, located in the exclusive shopping, restaurant and hotel enclave in Los Angeles, California. His practice is devoted exclusively to minimally invasive cosmetic procedures. “A good portion of my practice is devoted to arresting the signs of aging and sun damage”, says Doctor Ourian. “But I also spend a lot of time dealing with acne and acne scars. This type of damage is typically the result of acne during a patient’s teens and 20’s. As if it’s not bad enough to suffer from acne in the first place, I’ve seen the ongoing emotional toll acne scarring can cause for patients twenty or thirty years later.”
“Acne scarring probably effects men and women equally”, continues Doctor Ourian, “at least in my practice. In some ways acne scarring is more difficult emotionally for the men because women can use makeup to try and cover their blemishes and that’s not an option most men will consider. But now I’m glad to see patients in their teens and twenties coming in to deal with their scarring and with the Coolaser I believe I can save them years of torment and low self-esteem.”
What are acne scars? When tissue is injured the body works to repair the damage and acne scars are visible reminders of this response. Acne is caused when the body’s overproduction of sebum combines with dead skin cells to clog pores and create a fertile bacterial breeding ground. This may leak to neighboring tissue causing swelling, redness and bumps or pimples. The body will then rush white blood cells and a mix of inflammatory molecules to fight infection and repair the tissue. This process can take days or even weeks. But as with most patch repairs, visible reminders remain behind, worse for some than others.
There are several different types of acne scars:
1. Ice Pick Scars: These are among the most common and appear as deep pits in the skin.
2. Boxcar Scars: These are angular scars usually found around the temples and cheeks. Some may be shallow and others may be deep.
3. Rolling Scars: These scars are gently undulating, like hills and valleys without sharp borders.
4. Keloid scars: The scars are overgrowths of fibrous tissue that may occur after an injury to the skin such as acne and can form on the shoulders, back and chest.
“It gives me great satisfaction to help these patients”, states Doctor Ourian, “it makes all the work I put into developing the Coolaser and evolving techniques to achieve optimal results worthwhile. With the Coolaser I can effectively and exactingly remove just enough damaged skin to leave the surface smooth. For deeper acne scars I like to combine Coolaser with dermal fillers such as Radiesse®, Juvéderm® or Restylane®. In all the time I’ve been practicing as a cosmetic dermatologist,”
