Boston, Mass. – April 30, 2009 – Thirteen years ago Michael Blakely, the youngest of 13 children wanted to host a special Mother’s Day event to honor his mom. On May 10th, with the help of Nexus Alliance, an organization of more than 300 successful black men this year’s event will roll out the red carpet for more than 800 local women, many who are single mothers and who have struggled just to make ends meet.
This year’s event will help put the beliefs of the Nexus Alliance into action. The group was formed a year ago with the mission of changing the perception of black men in Boston. Through their actions, the members are demonstrating to the larger community how to honor all moms, single and otherwise. The group of men will transform the Blue Hill Avenue Boys and Girls Club into a luxurious getaway complete with a red carpet, photographers, a five star meal, a harpist, and free childcare. The Nexus members will act as waiters and will serve these moms who do so much for their families.
“We are doing the unexpected of what is expected and acting as role models by highlighting black men who are responsible and respectful to their wives and mothers,” said Dan Rivers, President of Nexus Alliance. “It’s also about showing the possibility of what we, successful optimistic men of color can achieve by coming together to server the greater good and leaving a positive legacy for our children.”
Tickets for the event cost $25 and many were donated by Nexus members to local churches to help provide tickets for women who could not otherwise attend. The funds raised through this event will benefit both the non-profit activities of the Boys and Girls Club and Nexus Alliance. Some tickets to this event are still available and can be purchased by calling 617-983-5994.
Organizations that are sponsoring this event include: S.A.W Construction Company, Ocean Spray, Taste of Charm City Catering, Pit Stop Barbecue, Chef Lee’s Famous Soul Food, Rockland Trust, Global View Communications, Eastern Bank and American Student Assistance.
