This book has been a long time coming. Sharlene started working with victims that had left their abuser with the false belief that all of a sudden they were survivors. Rude awakening just because someone leaves an abuser does not make them a survivor. Leaving an abusive relationship is not enough, because surviving and becoming a survivor means so much more. The truth is as Sharlene explains in her book, it can take up to 18 months to two years for a person to become a real survivor of this crime and up to five year or more for that same person to become a Thriver. Until that time the victim, is still a victim, and may continue to be victimized by their abuser, the courts, family, social service agencies, law enforcement and most of all THEMSELVES.
Sharlene doesn’t' hold back with the Truth in this book, she says because, "We have to stop finding excuses for the behavior of people out of control, who want to control others. Truth is these people who are hurting the ones they claim they love, our daughters, the women of our country, are JERKS, very dangerous people. They are the terrorist in our homes, our families and in our neighborhoods. It is important that we let our young women and men read about these types of relationships, so that if they find themselves in one they can have the tools needed to escape from the relationship. Our young women are not educated in this reality. We all want to believe our daughters will find a a wonderful person to love them. It is time that the Truth be told it does not always happen that way."
Those who contact her for help are not just victims, sometimes it is the mother, the parents, the grandparents or other friend who is looking for help for their love one who is in this destructive relationship or who are looking for their own support network so that they can understand why their child is not listening to them and stay with this abuser or are also concerned about their grandchildren well-being.
