The group form an organisation called Street Watch which was created in April 2008 and is supported by the North & East Hampshire Police. They have been attributed for a 27% drop in village crime.
As chair of the Four Marks chapter, Sonia is committed to ensuring the villagers can enjoy their community without fearing for their safety. Explaining why she joined Street Watch and what it means to her, Sonia says: “Local residents were experiencing groups of youths of various ages and on numerous occasions, being rowdy, shouting, swearing, drinking and just being a nuisance to everybody around them.”
Street Watch is attracting plenty of media attention. Meridian TV has spent an evening following the activities of the members and local shop owners were interviewed sharing their experiences on how the crime prevention scheme has reduced local problems and provided a real sense of visible reassurance. http://www.opustelecom.co.uk
