Sea Girt, NJ— In an economy where jobs continue to be lost or eliminated, the need for qualified nursing professionals continues to grow. Employment for Registered Nurses is expected to grow faster than all occupations and generate the largest number of new jobs for any field, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.  Over 587,000 new jobs are projected through 2016. Nursing as a career has also made US News and World Report’s list of The 30 Best Careers for 2009.

National Nurses Week, which begins on May 6, honors the field of nursing, and is devoted to highlighting the diverse ways in which registered nurses, the largest health care profession, are working to improve health care.  The celebration ends on May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, founder of nursing as a modern profession. During this week, registered nurses throughout the country will be celebrated and recognized through a variety of activities and events. Visit www.nursingworld.org for more information.

Donna Cardillo, RN, known as The Career Guru for Nurses, helps them explore the many opportunities available in their profession as the demand for nurses continues to grow.  “The highly publicized shortage of nurses has made nursing one of the hottest career opportunities today,” says Ms. Cardillo.  “It provides excellent job prospects, career longevity, and the chance to make a lasting difference in the world.”

The increasing demand for nurses has resulted in nursing schools being at full capacity, with thousands of students being turned away each year.  In many cases, there is a waiting list of up to three years for students wanting to apply for admission. “A growing number of those entering the nursing field are men, who are finally realizing that nursing offers a good salary and benefits, meaningful work, and opportunity for advancement,” says Ms. Cardillo.  “Other new entries into the field include vast numbers of people choosing nursing as a second career, coming from such diverse professions as banking, electrician, sales, entrepreneurship, technology and more.”
