Wikipedia has come up as the latest firm to reject the dubious targeted advertising technology of Phorm. The controversial technology had been rejected by Amazon, one of the most popular online stores of the world, lst week. Amazon, in a statement had made it clear that it would no more allow Phorm to access itsa webpages to glean information regarding internet users.
Widespread Resentment Towards PhormThe owners of Wikipedia, The Wikimedia Foundation has come up with a request that the scanning of all the domains under their control must be stopped by Phorm Website system. The website monitoring system of Phorm, allows ISPs to track the surfing paths of their customers on the internet, which can then be conveniently compiled to a profile of their interests to serve them with more relevant advertisements.
The spokesman of the Wikimedia Foundation has disclosed their opinion that profiling by scanning of their visitors' behavioural patterns by a third-party could only be considered by them as an infringement on their privacy. This was revealed in a blog. As a matter of fact, the Webwise technology of Phorm has faced a backlashed from the advocates of privacy, even though the company says that their system is fully anonymous.
Meanwhile, Phorm's service that is yet to be launched, has been approved by Stephen Carter, the UK minister responsible for the digital future of Britain, as well as the UK telecom regulator Ofcom.
