Introduction
Swine Influenza (swine flu) is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza virus that regularly causes outbreaks of influenza in pigs. The 2009 swine flu outbreak is the spread of a new strain of H1N1 influenza virus.
The new strain is an apparent mixed collection of several strains of influenza A virus subtype H1N1 including a strain endemic in humans and two strains endemic in pigs, as well as an avian influenza.
The current WHO phase of pandemic alert is 5 (as at 30 April 2009). This is a strong signal that a pandemic is imminent and that the time to finalize the organization, communication, and implementation of the planned mitigation measures is short.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have determined that this swine influenza A (H1N1) virus is contagious and is spreading from human to human. However, at this time, it is not known how easily the virus spreads between people. The Swine flu infection is thought to occur in the same way as seasonal flu occurs in people, which is mainly person-to-person transmission through coughing or sneezing of people infected with the influenza virus. People may become infected by TOUCHING something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose.
