Sal was a New York City Fireman for 24 years, who came out of retirement to help at Ground Zero on September 11th. at 67 years old, He worked long hours at the World Trade Center site helping the people he spent his career working with. In between, he delivered tools to firehouses that had lost tools at ground zero.
One year ago, his daughter wrote an essay for the contest, describing the hero that Sal has always been. This essay won him a spot as one of the top ten finalists in the Lenox Industrial Tools, Extra Mile Hero Contest. Public voting began on February 1st, 2009 and runs until April 30th, 2009. The Grand Finalist will be announced at the race in New Hampshire on June 28th, 2009. Should Sal be chosen the grand finalist and Jeff Burton wins the race, $500,000 will go to St. Jude's Children's Hospital. If Jeff Burton doesn't win the race, St. Jude's will receive $31,000.
