April 29, 2009 - PRLog -- What music to come down the aisle too.

As a musician and composer, I often pay more attention to the musical details of an event, than your average attendee/member of the public.  Music has been proven to work on very subconscious levels to change people’s decisions – and here’s the clever bit – without them even knowing.  So despite this unprecedented evidence, people seem to apply the minimum amount of ‘attention to detail’ when selecting a piece of music for their important occasions.

This has never been so prevalent than in the choice of wedding music.  Where not talking about the first dance – which usually will have some historic reference attached to its choice (first partner kiss, favourite song etc) but the bridal precession music.

Think about it – the dress, hours spent finding it, tweaking it for the perfect fit, the 3 month diet to get into it, the shoes, the bag, the hair, the jewellery and the make-out – choreographed to the finest detail.

Despite all this effort, brides so often take a listen to “The best classical wedding album in the world” and choose a classical piece of music that they have heard a few times on a bank advert or on classic FM lunch time slot, which they accidently tuned in on a radio scan.  This seems a disproportionate amount of effort to select their most important music choice of a lifetime.

A piece of music is the soundtrack to your entrance.  It should capture every essence of your character, your personality and awe-inspiring beauty, it should stop your wedding party in their tracks – it should initiate a deep and gasping intake of breathe as they truly comprehend your perfection.

Things you should consider before committing to a piece of music for your bridal entrance.

Does it compliment your appearance – if white and delicate – make sure your music is, if bold and bright make your music say the same.
Space – is there space in the music for you, or is it so busy it takes over.  Too often people choice a pop song with lyrics, and the singer takes over as everyone listens to the words.

Length – will you be waiting for it to finish, stood uncomfortably in front of your friends and family, or will someone fade it out just before the big chorus?

Is the arrangement appropriate?  You may be lucky enough to have a friend/family member do a professional edit of a piece of music, failing that, you should make sure that the relevant part of the music covers your journey to the front, with no self indulgent interludes in which a composer demonstrates their superior skills.

Associated use, has it been used before – although you may only have an image of you wandering down the aisle to Pachelbel’s ‘Canon’ – it is possible your friends and family have heard it at weddings three times already.  Possibly your husbands 1st wife? – Only kidding.  Do give this a thought if you pick a common piece of music, but more importantly just keep your eyes & ears on TV and Radio, in between holiday brochures and wedding magazines, leading up to the big day.  The last thing you need is your perfect choice becoming the soundtrack to a TV prime time hairy top lip waxing product ad.

For ideas don’t go for the obvious choice, or dash for “the best classical album ever”, try “The Wedding Ceremony Orchestra” for instance has composed nine original pieces specifically for the bride.  You can listen at iTunes or Amazon.  For style try George Gershwin, or ‘Stardust’ by Hoagy Carmichael.

Never before and hopefully never again will the anticipation of you entrance walking into a room be greater, make it count, make it unique…make it you.
