Apr 24, 2009 – Spring is officially here, and to the delight of fashionistas everywhere, this means that heavy winter clothes are officially condemned to storage for the next six months. With April also being official "Earth Month," today's eco-aware trendsetters are looking for hot new ways to jump start their summer style- and contribute to the well-being of our planet while doing so.
Designer Khrisna Justo created Kaija handbags for just that reason. Her complete line of totes and clutches are handcrafted from organic and eco-friendly materials, and truly reflect a sophisticated global style. Kaija, pronounced "kah-yah," means "able"- which spurred Justo's original inspiration to create the brand. During a visit to the Philippines, she discovered that impoverished women were proudly creating incomes for themselves by making goods out of weaving fibers. Seeing incredible potential in their techniques, she realized she had the ability to spread the word and talents of these struggling women. After returning home to New York, Justo established Kaija in an effort to work primarily for a cause- to empower women everywhere, in every community. Combining her Manhattan sense of style and a head for business, she made it the brand's mission to provide stable employment and new opportunities for underprivileged women. She designed a collection of handbags using only the natural, indigenous fibers of the Philippines, and the result was exquisite: an eco-friendly handbag line with a cosmopolitan flare. The first collection she designed, the Classic Collection, is Justo's admitted personal favorite Collection. Not only is it timeless and sophisticated, it also represents smart style- making it the perfect accompaniment for the quintessentially empowered and eco-aware New York woman. Justo created her latest Montauk Collection out of inspiration from the small, tranquil and picturesque town of the same name. The laid-back beauty and tranquility of Montauk, New York is reflected in the bag designs- beautiful clutches that capture the natural essence of earth, sun and water through a stunning range of deep, bright and vibrant colors. Established in 2006, a portion of all Kaija earnings are donated to UNICEF’s programs for orphan children.
