Fund Raising Drive to Criss-Cross the Country

The 1+1=1 Pledge Drive SA gets under way from Hoedspruit on Friday, 24 April 2009.  The aim of this campaign is to create a country-wide spirit of environmental and social tolerance, AND, to compliment a global conservation initiative.  The objective will be to get a minimum of 1 million people throughout South Africa to sign a scroll of goodwill and pledge R1 towards the environmental future of this country.  The journey, which begins at Hoedpsruit and ends in Cape Town some 8 weeks and 6500 kilometres later, will zigzag through all 9 provinces covering as much of the country as possible. It is the intention of this initiative to incorporate and showcase some of South Africa’s extraordinary natural and cultural attractions. By adding an element of adventure and exploration of all 9 provinces, the journey will especially embrace environmentally and socially sustainable initiatives.  50% of the money raised by this pledge drive will be used to plant indigenous trees (as part of the UNEP Billion Tree Campaign) with the remaining 50% going towards the development of environmental and sustainable living projects.

This fund raising initiative has been organised by Wilderness Vision (WV), a non profit organisation that works to develop and implement environmental education and sustainable living projects in order to combat Africa’s greatest challenges. Through the generosity of corporate and individual sponsors WV has already been able to create, facilitate and run meaningful conservation, upliftment and sustainable projects.  These have included providing text books, school uniforms, classroom facilities, food gardens and planting indigenous trees at schools and day care centres.

Jonathan and Nick, two young, dynamic and very enthusiastic, born and bred South African’s will front the Pledge Drive. Jonathan is a spirited outdoorsman, not adverse to a bit of adrenaline with experience in teaching and nature guiding. Nick has boldly stepped out of the safety zone of I.T. to embark on this meaningful journey. Also not afraid of a bit of fun! Committed and passionate, both Jonathan and Nick are prepared to go the extra kilometres (some 6500) for the cause – literally!
