LOS ANGELES, Calif. – A piece of 1970s history – the red bathing suit Farrah Fawcett wore in the 1976 poster that became one of the era’s most recognizable icons – was recently appraised by Hollywood memorabilia expert Nate D. Sanders.
“There are really three ‘holy grails’ of Hollywood memorabilia,”
Sanders estimates that the bathing suit would bring between $200,000 and $300,000 at auction if Fawcett decides to sell it. Fawcett, who was diagnosed with cancer in 2006, has sold some of her memorabilia to raise money for cancer research. Just this month, the 62-year-old actress – best known for starring in the Charlie’s Angels television series and critically acclaimed movies like The Burning Bed – was treated at a Los Angeles hospital. She has since been released.
Celebrities like Fawcett turn to Sanders because, for the past 30 years, he has been one of the Hollywood memorabilia, rare books and autograph industry’s most respected experts and dealers. A collector since the late 1970s, Sanders was already widely known in collectors’ circles when he opened his auction business in Los Angeles in 1990. Today, he conducts six major auctions every year drawing bidders, collectors and investors from around the world.
“There are nearly 30,000 online fan clubs dedicated to Farrah Fawcett,” Sanders said. “She has an amazing following of devoted fans. There are nearly 13,000 web sites dedicated specifically to her disease and treatment. It makes you feel good to see how her fans are supporting her and reaching out to her during this time.”
