Sitting in their vehicle underneath a giant set of golden arches outside a McDonald's restaurant, a couple was crushed inside their Chevy Trailblazer in a carpark, in eastern Arizona.
Retirees Russell and Carolyn Janke decided to take a break on the Navajo Nation reservation in Window Rock, as they travelled between suburban Chicago and their winter home near Tuscon. They suffered multiple injuries as the world renown McDonalds symbol collapsed on their car. The couple were knocked unconscious, not knowing what had hit them.
Steven Nelson, Navajo’s acting police chief said: "It was a freak accident. The winds were reaching up to 60 mph." The high winds toppled the sign from the top of a pole, across the street from the restaurant.
Rescue crews were forced to cut 68 year old Carolyn Janke out of the vehicle.
Media were told by the couple's daughter-in-
Ann Janke is absolutely furious. “I want to know how come that sign was not properly secured?”
“I’ve been worried about the sign toppling for a while,” says local worker, Richard Laughing. “I’ve been working her for two years and seen the sign blow back and forth in the wind. I told my wife it’s going to blow over.”
