Alumar has been operating since 1984 and is one of the largest and most complex Aluminum and Alumina producers in the world. With an expansion, Alumar aims to increase the production of Alumina at the refinery in São Luiz (Brazil) from 1.5 million tons to 3.5 million tons a year. (http://www.alumar.com.br/
SGS was awarded the contract to carry out Construction Supervision services during the 6 months of construction. SGS will conduct diverse commissioning, automation and electrical services and will place specialized human resources at Alumar’s disposal.
São Luiz is located 3,000 km away from the major industrialized areas of Brazil such as São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro, which means there is an acute shortage of qualified labor in the area. In order to cover the necessities of this project, SGS has set up an operational base in Maranhão with almost 300 people, including calibration lab personnel, field staff and administrative support.
SGS is responsible for the identification of bottlenecks and the inspection of the electrical and automation works performed by the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractor, as well as for the assembly of control instruments, the calibration and certification of these instruments, and finally for the commissioning of the plant for the owners. The estimated completion date for the facility is August 2009.
This project could not have been carried out without the expertise of the former PiD Group, which was acquired by SGS in September 2008. (http://www.sgs.com/
